Entered navy in 1777. Promoted to lieutenant for bravery. Adviser to King of Sweden earning nickname the Swedish Knight. Raised Napoleon’s siege of Acre in 1799. Destroyed Turkish fleet off Abydos in 1807. Became vice-admiral of the Blue in 1810.
