Fought in France and Hungary. Captured and sold as slave but escaped to Russia. Joined expedition to colonize Virginia in 1607. Saved from native American tribe by Pocahontas, elected President of colony (1608-09). Returned to England in 1609. Later explored New England coast. Writings included The True Travels, Adventures and Observations of Captaine John Smith (1630).
