Born 1724. Died 1792 - English civil engineer.

Worked as mathematical-instrument maker. Elected to FRS in 1753. Won Copley award for his research into waterwheels and windmills. Designed third Eddystone lighthouse, in use until 1877. Major engineering works included Ramsgate Harbour, the Forth and Clyde Canal and bridges at Coldstream and Perth.
