Born 1811. Died 1870 - Scottish obstetrician and pioneer of anaesthesia.
Studied art and medicine at Edinburgh University. Became Professor of Midwifery in 1840. Instigated use of ether as anaesthetic in childbirth. Developed chloroform using it on Queen Victoria at the birth of Prince Leopold. Founded gynaecology, fought for hospital reform, became physician to the Queen in Scotland. Made baronet in 1866.
