Lecturer in elocution at Edinburgh University. Professional stage debut in Othello (1930). Film debut in Riverside Murder (1935). Other films included Green for Danger (1946), Scrooge (1951) and The Belles of St. Trinians (1954). On stage had long association with playwright James Bridle.
