Born 1823 - Lenthe, Hanover, Germany. Died 1883 - British electrical engineer.

Studied physics, chemistry and mathematics. Became British citizen in 1859. Involved in construction of telegraphs, designed steamship Faraday for cable-laying and constructed the Portrush Electric Tramway in Ireland (1883). Invented a water meter, pyrometer and bathometer. Elected FRS in 1863, knighted in 1883.
