Sir Philip Sidney

Born 1554. Died 1586 - English poet and patron.
Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Travelled in France, Germany and Austria; studied history and ethics in Italy. Knighted in 1582. Made Governor of Flushing in 1585. Led an assault on a Spanish convoy when he was shot in the thigh, died from the infection. All his work was published posthumously and included Arcadia (1590) and A Defence of Poetry (1595). Patron to a number of poets.
