Studied chemistry and natural philosophy at Edinburgh University. Wrote first scientific records of Arctic seas and lands. Surveyed east coast of Greenland. Ordained in 1825. Studied terrestrial magnetism in Australia, improved the marine compass. Elected FRS in 1824.
