(full name and title: Sir Steven Geoffrey Redgrave, CBE)
Born: 23 March 1962

Steven Redgrave is a British rower and can rightly claim the honour of being Britain's most successful Olympian of all time. He is the only Briton to have won five Olympic gold medals at five successive Games. Birgit Fischer equalled the feat in 2004 but Redgrave was the only athlete in the world to have achieved five consecutive golds when he was Olympic champion between 1984 and 2000.

A large and powerfully built man, even by rowing standards, Redgrave stands some 6ft 5ins tall. His obvious strength and fitness does, however, somewhat belie the true struggle that he has been through in maintaining his dominance of the sport. In 1992 he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and in 1997 diabetes. With this in mind it seems even more incredible that Steven Redgrave managed to keep up the gruelling training that was required to maintain a successful Olympic career spanning almost 20 years.

His first Olympic gold came at the 1984 Games in the coxed four. In 1988 he followed this with bronze in the Coxed Pair and gold in the Coxless Pair event. He stayed with this event to win gold again in both the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games; this time partnered by another British rowing great Matthew Pinsent. He took gold again with Pinsent in 2000, this time with Tim Foster and James Cracknell in the Coxless Four race.

During his career he also won a staggering total of 12 medals in the World Championships. His haul included nine golds, two silvers and one bronze medal. Redgrave also managed to win three gold medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

Steven Redgrave is now retired from rowing and pursues various commercial and charitable interests including running a men's leisure wear company.
