Read classics at Somerville College, Oxford. Leader in the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies. As secretary of the Women’s Industrial Council in Liverpool, involved campaign against low pay and bad working conditions. Elected as independent MP for the Combined English Universities. Looked into poverty in Britain, argued for the introduction of family allowances. In 1925 published her book The Disinherited Family. Attacked the appeasement of Hitler and supported intervention in the Spanish Civil War. Worked on behalf of refugees.
