Born 1780. Died 1856 - English civil and mechanical engineer.

Worked for several firms of iron-founders. Designed and built the cast-iron bridge over the Wye at Chepstow (1815-16). Supported the use of steam locomotives. Built a colliery railway in Staffordshire. Responsible for the construction of the London and Brighton railway which opened in 1841. Other railways he built included the Bolton & Preston (1841), Gravesend & Rochester (1845) and Nottingham & Grantham (1846).
