Allan Ramsay

Died on 7th of January 1758
Born 1686. Died 1758 - Scottish poet.
Apprenticed to a wig-maker in Edinburgh but by 1718 had been well-known as a poet. Collected and rewrote a large collection of old Scottish songs and ballads (1724). Published The Gentle Shepherd (1725) a pastoral comedy, later formed the basis of John Gay's The Beggar's Opera. Opened a number of bookseller's shops and a library, one of the first in Britain.
