Henry Raeburn

Died on 8th of July 1823

Born 1756. Died 1823 - Scottish portrait painter.

Studied in Rome for two years. Returned to Scotland where he became a successful artist, firstly in watercolours and the in oils. Painted leading figures of Edinburgh society including Sir Walter Scott, James Boswell and David Hume. One of his best known works is The Reverend Robert Walker Skating (1784). Was knighted by George IV in 1822.
