Born 1913. Died 1989 - English actor and director.

Made his first stage appearance in 1931 before joining the Old Vic Company. After army service in WWII he joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre as an actor and director. Was instrumental in the creation of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960. Founded the Compass Theatre Company in 1982. His major films include The Guns of Navarone (1961) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Knighted in 1985.
