Born 1941 - English filmmaker.

Worked in photography and advertising before turning to film-making. His first production, S.W.A.L.K(1971), was written by Alan Parker, went on to produce Bugsy Malone (1976) and Midnight Express (1978). Employed Ridley Scott to direct The Duellists (1977), the first production of Puttnam's own production company, Enigma. Hired Hugh Hudson to direct Chariots of Fire (1981). Led to the larger scale films of Local Hero (1983) and The Killing Fields (1984). Later films include Memphis Belle 91990) and My Life So Far (2000). Knighted in 1995, created a peer in 1997.
