Published his first novel Claire Drummer in 1929, followed by Nothing Like Leather (1935) and Dead Man Leading (1937). Lectured widely as a literary critic. Critical works include The Living Novel (1946) and Books in General (1953). Also wrote short stories and two autobiographies. Knighted in 1975, Companion of Honour in 1993.
