Born 1500. Died 1558 - English Roman Catholic churchman.

Studied at Oxford and in Padua, Italy. Made a cardinal by Pope Paul III in 1536. Returned to England to become one of Mary I’s most influential advisers, possibly resulting in the hardening of her attitude to Protestants. Succeeded Thomas Cranmer as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1556.
