Born 1950. Irish filmmaker and writer.

Studied history and literature at University College, Dublin. Won Guardian Fiction prize with Night in Tunisia (1976), followed by the novels The Past (1980) and The Dreams of the Beast (1983). Made debut as director with Angel (1982), followed by The Company of Wolves (1984) and Mona Lisa (1986). Won Academy award for Best Original Screenplay with The Crying Game (1992). Later films include Michael Collins (1996) and The End of the Affair (1999).
