After graduating from Cambridge he joined the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Made television debut in She Stoops to Conquer (1961). Invited by Laurence Olivier in 1963 to join the newly-established National Theatre. Appeared in Man of Straw (1972), The Strauss Family (1972) and The Pallisers (1974). Played title role in I, Claudius (1976). Appeared in Philby, Burgess and Maclean (1977), Richard II (1978), Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (1980) and Cyrano de Bergerac (1985). Received a knighthood in 1994. One of Britain’s best known classical actors.
