Director of Edinburgh Film Festival (1973-80). Curator of Pacific Film Archive in California (1980-82). Worked for Channel 4 and Enigma films producing Defence of the Realm (1985). As independent film producer had success with films such as The Commitments (1991) and The Van (1996). Received BFI Special Award for services to film industry.
