Worked original Billy Smart’s Circus. After WWI pursued solo career as stand-up comedian. Made London debut in 1922. Top of the bill at Holborn Empire in 1926; maintained this position for three decades. Nicknamed the “Cheeky Chappie”. Made film debut in The Good Companions (1933).
