This is probably the most comprehensive and informative source of information about the "Elephant Man." It covers all aspects of Merrick's early life, career as a novelty, and final years at the London Hospital under the care of Frederick Treves where he was befriended by Alexander, Princess of Wales and Madge Kendal, among other illustrious members of society. Despite his extremely severe condition, Joseph Merrick was a gentle, courageous man, educated and kind. When he died at age 27, he was mourned by many.
