James Macpherson
Born in Ruthven, HighlandsBorn on 27th of October 1736
Died on 17th of February 1796
Born 1736. Died 1796 - Scottish poet and translator of Ossian.
Studied for ministry but became village schoolmaster. Published epic poem The Highlander (1758). Published material relating to the legendary figure Fingal, received with huge acclaim but authenticity was questioned. Later became a wealthy merchant, MP for Camelford. Buried in Westminster Abbey at his own request and expense.
