Studied at Royal College of Music. First major work, a piano concerto, performed in 1930. Best known works include Symphony (1953), an overture Proud Thames (1953) and a carol cantata A Christmas Morning (1962). Also written choral and orchestral work and an opera for children. Made DBE in 1987.
