Won a short story competition in 1954 while a schoolteacher. Produced a full-length novel HMS Ulysses in 1955, immediate bestseller. Turned to full-time writing. His many books include Ice Station Zebra (1963), Where Eagles Dare (1967) and Athabasca (1980). Also written a western and biographies to T E Lawrence and Captain Cook. Many of his stories have become successful films.
