Read history at Somerville College, Oxford. First novel was Abbots Verney (1906). Dangerous Ages (1921) won the Femina Vie Heureuse prize. The World My Wilderness (1950) and The Towers of Trebizond (1956) won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Wrote travel books and collections of essays. Created DBE in 1958.
