Studied at RADA. Made film debut in Lorna Doone (1934). Long-term contract with British Lion, achieved stardom in The Lady Vanishes (1938). Briefly in Hollywood before returning to Great Britain, became favourite British female star. Last leading role in Cast a Dark Shadow (1955). Spent last years as publicity-shy recluse.
