Hardwicke Rawnsley should really be far more of a national hero than is actually the case. After his studies at Balliol and mission work in Bristol he was ordained a priest in 1877, and the following year began his ministry in the Lake District, as Vicar of Wray – later he was Vicar of Crosthwaite. Rawnsley’s great contribution to our national heritage is not his prolific literary output as a (very) minor poet, biographer of Ruskin, and writer on the Lakes, but his work in protecting that beautiful part of the country from development, work that led to the founding of the National Trust, his idea and his great legacy.
