Henderson enjoyed two careers, the first military, the second civilian. As an officer in the Royal Engineers he worked on surveying Canada before becoming Comptroller General of Convicts and Director of Prisons in Western Australia, the first in the office – arriving in the colony with the first convicts to find little or no preparation made, a situation he energetically tackled. A year after leaving the army he became the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, in his time expanding the detective branch, dealing with the first police strike, and improving record keeping.
