Born 1931 - English novelist.



Taught French and German before going into British Foreign Service. Resigned in 1964 to become full-time writer. First published novel was Call for the Dead (1961) which introduced the charcater, George Smiley. Other novels included The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (1963) and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974). Many of his books were filmed and televised.
