Barry spent several years in Italy and various other countries around the Mediterranean as part of a grand tour, thanks to an inheritance from his father, and some of his work reflects the consequent influence of Italian, especially Renaissance, architecture. Barry is most celebrated for his work on the Palace of Westminster, with other major commissions including The Reform Club, the Manchester Athenaeum, and the remodelling of Highclere Castle.
