James I was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, his father was Henry, Duke of Albany, his mother was Mary Queen of Scots, who was a Catholic, she was imprisoned and then made to abdicate. She sought the protection of Queen Elizabeth I, who pondered over her future. James succeeded his mother at the tender age of 1 year, he was crowned King Of Scotland on 29th July 1567 and was to rule as James VI King Of Scotland.
After his mother's enforced abdication she had fled to England, however, she was imprisoned and later executed by Queen Elizabeth I in 1587, James had been raised by a series of Regents and was well educated. Two years after his mother's execution he married Anne of Denmark, they had several children, Henry who died in 1612, which then left Charles next in line, and Elizabeth who was later to reign as Queen of Bohemia. He was not a popular king, the country was influenced by Clan Chieftains and powerful Nobles.
When Elizabeth I died as she had not married, and not produced an heir he ascended to the English throne, and on his journey from Scotland to England was pleased at the reception that he received from his subjects. His Coronation took place on the 25th July 1603, he was aged thirty six years, the first of the Stuart Monarchs. His love of fine clothes, jewels and the finer things in life proved expensive, his great passion was hunting which absorbed much of his time, it was well known within his court that if he had a successful days hunting life was more pleasurable.
James had been raised a Protestant, and during his reign he strengthened his position as it has been said that he was soft on Catholic's, he was at Hampton Court when it was agreed that the bible would be re-translated, this was carried out in 1612, and became the official translation known as King Jame's version.
He was to suffer a severe threat to his safety when in 1605 Guy Fawkes was discovered deep within the bowels of the Houses Of Parliament with many barrels of gunpowder for company, James needed to deal severely, quickly, and perhaps publicly in order to quash future attacks. This he did, the plotters and traitors of the gunpowder plot were tortured and then publicly executed. James I died 27th March 1625. He was later buried at Westminster Abbey, his son Charles succeeded him and ruled as Charles I.
