Born Nov 23rd 1830 - Died 1863 - Artist
Artist born Southampton in poor circumstances. He received little in the way of education, and became a house painter at the age of fourteen. At seventeen he began to paint portraits and his early talent was recognised by a travelling picture restorer. He travelled on the Continent and returning to England he set up his studio in Highfield Southampton. He painted there the magnificent work The Temple of Venus, which has not been seen publicly since 1915. Much of Bridell's other work is waiting to be re-discovered. Southampton Art Gallery has the most impressive of Bridell's known work The Coliseum by Moonlight.
Bridell met a fellow artist in Rome, and they were married very soon in 1859. As the daughter
of an MP she was known to the literary figures of the time and thus Bridell moved
into a social sphere that he would not have anticipated in his earlier years.
Due to his dedication to his art, his health began to suffer and he died from consumption at the age of thirty three. Had he lived longer he would have undoubtedly been one of England's
painters, and was said to be 'second to Turner in his painting of skies' in his obituary in
the Art Journal of that year.
