Christine Ohuruogu career follows a familiar pattern with sport forming an important part of her early years.
She had been an England International Under-17 and Under-19 net ball player until she decided to concentrate on athletics. A surprise bronze medal in the European Junior 400m prompted her to drop net ball in 2003.
Ohuruogu studied linguistics at University College, London. Her sister, Victoria, is also a talented sprinter and set a UK Under-15 300m best of 40.25 in 2007.
At Junior level she was a 400m Bronze medallist at the 2003 European Championships after missing the previous season due to a hamstring injury.
She reached the semi-finals in the 400m event at Athens 2004. Ohuruogu was also part of the Team GB 4x400m squad which reached the final that year. Two years later she ran a personal best time of 50.28 to win Commonwealth Gold in Melbourne 2006.
Controversy followed her success in Melbourne when she missed three out-of-competition drugs tests. Ohuruogu was banned for a year by the IAAF and subsequently missed the 2006 European Championships.
In 2007 following her return from the ban she was awarded the honour of female athlete of the year by the British Athletics Writers'. This award was in recognition of her 400m gold at the World Championships in Osaka that year, where she was the first GB woman to win a global 400m title. In November 2007 Ohuruogu successfully appealed under the BOA's Eligibility Bye-Law to restore her eligibility to compete for a place in Team GB at Olympic Games.
Ohuruogu is a member of the Newham and Essex Beagles Athletics club and is coached by Lloyd Cowan.
Ohuruogu was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she will be running in the 400m and 4 x 400m relay disciplines.
