Nathan Robertson, in common with so many successful athletes and sports personalities, started his game while he was still very young. He was introduced to the badminton by his family when he was only six years old. Robertson took to the sport in earnest and was launched onto the international stage when he made his England debut against China at the age of 18. Robertson has forged ahead since those early days and has since established himself as one of the world's premier badminton players.
Robertson has a raft of medals and titles showcasing the success he has achieved in badminton. Early in his career, while still in his early twenties, he scored three medals at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Along with two bronze medals Robertson also won silver in the mixed doubles with Joanne Davies. He went on to further international achievements that included a World Championship Bronze (men's), four Grand Prix titles (five mixed, one men's), six Commonwealth medals and European Gold and Silver medals (mixed & men's doubles).
Olympic success soon came when he and his long-term partner Gail Emms won the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The pair took the medal after a thrilling final where they were narrowly beaten by defending champions Zhang Jun and Gao Ling of China. The marathon 93 minute match finished 15-1, 12-15, 15-12 after Nathan and Gail lead 11-8 in the deciding game. Their Silver medal is Great Britain's highest ever result in badminton at the time.
Nathan Robertson had another very successful year in 2005 where he won the All England title and the China Open in mixed doubles with partner Gail Emms. In 2006 he won Gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in the mixed doubles.
Robertson once again partnered Emms in mixed doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China
