Christian Malcolm was born in Newport, South Wales, on June 3, 1979. He specialising in the 200m discipline.
Another talented sportsman from a very young age, Malcolm was a useful footballer as a youngster. He spurned the game and instead decided on athletics and followed his cousin Kevin Williams, a Welsh international sprinter, into athletics.
He showed early promise when he was crowned 1997 European Junior Champion at 200m. He also won a gold medal in the 4x100m relay.
Success kept coming and Malcolm went on to win the title of World Junior Athlete of the Year in 1998. At the 1998 World Junior Championships, he won the 200m sprint in a time of 20.44 seconds. The same year, at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he ran a 20.29 200m race to secure the silver medal. The time was a European Junior and Welsh senior record.
At the Sydney, Australia Olympics of 2000 (the so-called Millennium Games or Games of the New Millennium) the Welshman reached the 200m Final in Sydney where he came a creditable 5th.
2001 was another good year for the sprinter, with Malcolm taking silver in the World Indoors. He increased his tally in the summer, taking medals in both the 100m and 200m at the AAA Championships. He made both finals in Edmonton and came away with personal best times in both events. A fault with a wind gauge when he ran 10.09 in the 100m quarter-finals meant his 10.11 in the final was recorded as his official best. His 20.08 in the 200 semi-final suggested a sub-20 was within reach for the athlete.
The European Indoors in 2002 once again saw Malcolm on the podium with a silver that was so nearly gold, and his relay victories that year included the European Cup and Euro Championships.
He went out in the 200m semi finals in the Olympics at Athens in 2004. Malcolm was selected to represent the Great Britain Olympic team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China.
