John Stainer

Stainer’s musical career began at St Paul’s Cathedral, where he was a boy chorister. He became organist at St Michael’s College, Tenbury, then at Magdelen College, Oxford, where - when his duties allowed - he studied for his BA and MA. Among other later positions he was organist at St Paul’s and Professor of Music at Oxford, but he is remembered for the church music he wrote, the most famous of his compositions The Crucifixion still regularly performed.
