John Snow

Snow was apprenticed to a surgeon, and worked as a surgeon’s assistant in various towns in the North East before studying medicine at the Hunterian School, Westminster Hospital, and UCL. His fame comes from two different aspects of his career: firstly, he deduced that cholera was spread by contaminated water, and took action to halt outbreaks in London in 1848 and 1854; and second as a pioneer anaesthetist who in 1853 was called upon to administer chloroform to Queen Victoria as she gave birth to one of her many children.
