In a lengthy military career Horace Smith-Dorrien proved himself to be – rather rarely for a senior British officer of the period – a forward-thinking and intelligent commander. He was one of the few survivors of Isandlwana; instigated training and welfare reforms at Aldershot; saw the need to change cavalry into mounted infantry; in the Boer War and later in WWI acted in defiance of inept orders from superiors, to the benefit of his men and the strategic position (but not his career); and as Governor of Gibraltar took tentative steps towards democracy there
