Stevie Smith
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Hull, East Yorkshire
Born on 20th of September 1902
Died on 7th of March 1971

Smith first came to public notice as a novelist, but is best remembered for her poems, the most celebrated of which is Not Waving but Drowning. She is a delightfully English conundrum, able to write lightly on the most profound of topics – death a fixation with her – her political views neither left nor right, fascinated with loneliness and profoundly shy yet with a wide circle of intellectual friends, and, as she described herself, ‘a lapsed atheist,’ loving the idea of a god in which she did not apparently believe. Stevie Smith was a close friend of George Orwell, and possibly a lover.
