Robert Smirke
Born in Wigton, CumbriaBorn in 1752
Died on 5th of January 1845
Smirke was one of the leading architects of his day, and a prolific one with 50 or so public buildings to his name (The British Museum his largest and his best known), and at least that number of great houses (interestingly he tended to employ different styles for the two groups of buildings, gothic for houses and classical for public structures). He was an innovator in practical matters like the use of concrete foundations and iron support beams.
