A highly influential conductor who began in 1899 and by 1908 had formed his own Beecham Symphony Orchestra. In 1932 he formed the London Philharmonic, which was triumphant in both concert and opera. In America he was director of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and conducted numerous orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera. In 1944 he returned to Britain and created the Royal Philharmonic. He was knighted in 1916.
