Cecil Sharp
Born in Denmark Hill, LondonBorn on 22nd of November 1859
Died on 23rd of June 1924
After his education at Uppingham and Clare College, Cambridge, Sharp emigrated to Australia and after some time as a bank clerk worked for five years as associate to the chief justice in South Australia. He then moved into music as an organist, lecturer, conductor and administrator, before returning to England in 1892, where he began teaching music, developing an interest in English folk tunes. Gathering, preserving and spreading the use of folk music became his lifelong passion, in the USA as well as Britain. His bowdlerisation of some folk songs is much criticised, but it cannot be denied he was a catalyst in reviving the folk idiom.
