Seward was born in Eyam in Derbyshire, the daughter of a cleric. Dubbed ‘the Swan of Lichfield’ where she lived in the bishop’s palace most of her life (her father a canon in that city), Anna Seward was a somewhat peripheral romantic poet, wrote one novel, and provided material for Boswell’s Life of Johnson (who had admired her Elegy on Captain Cook). She was also keenly interested in matters scientific, especially botany, and published some anonymous writings in that area.
