Seward was educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School then at St John’s College Cambridge, where he was intended for the church. His fascination with matters botanical led to his diversion into that field, in which he was appointed a lecturer, tutor, then eventually professor. An energetic teacher and researcher he published widely in his chosen field, his expertise acknowledged with entry into the Royal Society aged just 35.
