After his education at Fettes and Cambridge Selwyn Lloyd qualified as a barrister and entered practice. Switching from the Liberals to the Conservatives he served in local government, then after war service entered Parliament in 1945. He held several high offices, most notably Foreign Secretary during the Suez crisis, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Leader of the Commons and Speaker.
