Charlotte Schreiber
Born in Uffington, LincolnshireBorn on 19th of May 1812
Died on 15th of January 1895
Charlotte Schreiber was born Lady Charlotte Elizabeth Bertie, but she avoided the clichéd path of an aristocratic lady of her age (though she did have 10 children with her first husband). By marrying a Welsh iron-master (thus socially beneath her) she escaped her family, joined her partner’s philanthropic activity, and (already a skilled linguist) learned Welsh and published the first modern translation of the Mabinogion. She was also a noted diarist, and after marrying for a second time became a great collector, principally of porcelain, her china now held at the V&A.
