Thomas Sandby

Sandby, the son of a Nottinghamshire textile worker, became a skilful (though self-taught) draughtsman and architect, and won fame particularly as a watercolour painter. Among the milestones of his life was service as Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park, where he instituted major new landscaping projects, as he did at Virginia Water; being a founding member of the Royal Academy; and acting as the Duke of Cumberland’s private secretary, thus being present at the battles of Dettingen and Culloden.
