BOOK ST HELENS HOTELS

John Rylands
- Favourite Briton.

Born in St Helens, Merseyside
Born on 7th of February 1801
Died on 11th of December 1888

John Rylands began his career in very humble circumstances, working in his father’s draper’s shop, but he had a flair for business, first selling handlooms then manufacturing cloth. He became a very wealthy man, at one point employing 15000 people whose labours produced nearly 40 tons of cloth daily. Rylands became a great philanthropist, contributing generously to many causes, but it is now largely through his third wife’s memorial to him in the shape of the wonderful John Rylands Library in Manchester that he is remembered.

From littlemum on 9th August 2010
John Rylands widow provided the John Rylands Library to the City of Manchester in his memory, which now unfortunately instead of being for the people of Manchester has been handed over to Manchester University. This is not what the intention was by John Rylands widow.
