Sir Edward John Russell was a forward-thinking agriculturalist who worked for more than 30 years at the Rothamsted Experimental Station. He wrote several important texts on soil and its fertility. Concerned by the poor exchange of information on agricultural techniques and studies at that time, he established what became the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux.
